Have investigated for same reasons

For my wife and I (nonsmokers), it was running about $1200/month for high deductible plan. I am looking for bare bones coverage, mainly to protect against a health care related bankruptcy (a very specific American risk)...I have two college aged kids that I'll be moving to coverage provided by their universities.

This will be my biggest expense for the next 15 years by far. You may want to look at different states (if you're willing to move) and whether there is a reduction at lower levels of income (Colorado does subsidize at reduced incomes and not net worth) to help reduce your cost of coverage.
